Successful program completers are qualified for a Single Subject Teaching Credential that qualifies them to teach at the middle and high school level (Grades 6-12); some subject areas span Grades K-12. Candidates in the SSOC can choose one of the following subject areas for their credential: Art, Dance, English, Music, Physical Education, Social Science (History), World Languages (languages other than English; credentials available for any language for which there is a CSET), or Theater.
Note: Science and math credentials are only offered on campus, and are not a part of the Online Single Subject Teaching Credential program. The online campus at Cal State East Bay is well known for its quality and approach to student service. The Department of Teacher Education faculty teaching in the online program are committed to preparing effective teachers and other educational professionals for California's diverse schools. The faculty have years of recognized expertise and are active in the professional discipline of Teacher Education. They are supplemented by a select group of lecturers and university supervisors drawn from respected universities and public schools from within the Bay Area and beyond.
Dr. Eric Engdahl teaches standards-based visual and performing arts methods to undergraduates, multiple-subject credential candidates, and masters students in the Early Childhood Education program. His classes cover how to effectively integrate visual and performing arts across the curricula. He teaches single subject methods courses in visual art, social studies, physical education, and music. In addition to teaching at CSUEB, he has taught in the Actor Training Program at Solano College, Wright State University, and Florida International University. He works as a consultant and artist in the classroom with many schools in the East Bay.
As the first person in my family to complete high school-let alone go to college-I know the power of literacy and how a single teacher can change the entire trajectory of a student's life.
Dr. Denise, as her students call her, brings nearly four decades of K-12 and university teaching experience to her work with graduate students. Her teaching and scholarship are grounded in social justice, diversity, and practical applications of theoretical and evidence-based knowledge.
Dr. Fleming completed her doctoral degree at UC Berkeley. Her accomplishments include serving President of the California Reading Association, Chair of the CSU system-wide Reading Task Force, Co-director of an $800,000 literacy-based school-university partnership grant, and three terms as Chair of the CSU system-wide standing committee on Academic Preparation and Education Programs (APEP).
Dr. Fleming holds several credentials, including Multiple Subject, two Single Subjects, a specialist credential in Reading and Language Arts, a supplemental authorization in Mathematics; and the Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificate. She is multilingual and has taught in bilingual and ESL settings.
Dr. Fleming's areas of scholarly interest include literacy across the life spectrum, teacher development in diverse settings, assessment, higher education governance, second language pedagogy, and technology applications in educational settings. Dr. Fleming is also an educational consultant in private practice.
Dr. James M. Mitchell is a professor of Teacher Education. He started the first-ever single subject credential online program in the CSU in 2019 and served as Director of the Global Single Subject Credential Remote Program from 2019-22. In June 2022, Dr. Mitchell returned to full-time teaching.
He has been a member of the CSUEB Teacher Education faculty since 2002. Dr. Mitchell teaches Foundations of Education, Technology in Education, and Professional Responsibilities. His research focuses on technology in teacher education, cooperation, and conflict resolution as related to HIV/AIDS education and service learning, as well as democratic-citizenship skill development through cooperation in the classroom. Presently, Dr. Mitchell is part of a seven-person team that is collaborating on a project to teach Social Studies using STEM and other subjects, specifically as such teaching relates to Civil Rights. His work focuses on "access for all" in today's political and socio-cultural climate.
Dr. Mary Soto is an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education. She teaches English Methods, Introduction to Teaching Emergent Bilinguals, and Inclusive Teaching in Single Subject/Multiple Subject Classrooms. Her research focuses on long-term English Learners and effective strategies for differentiating Language Arts curriculum.
Dr. Soto is a Board Member of the California Council of Teacher Educators. Before coming to CSUEB, Dr. Soto was the Bilingual Teaching Program Coordinator at California State University, Chico. Prior to that, she taught high school theater, E.L.D. and English in California, Mexico, and South Texas.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Soto enjoys working out at the gym and going for long hikes in the beautiful Bay Area. She has two children who attend elementary and high school in Hayward. Her husband has been a bilingual elementary school teacher for over 25 years.

The online program is designed for candidates with bachelor's degrees. You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.67 or a 2.75 GPA in your last 60 units to be admitted and be in good academic standing.
Applicants must submit two applications to be considered for the program; one to the department and one to the university through Cal State Apply.
